DESCRIPTION

INGREDIENTS

  • 7 cups flour
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 3 tsp yeast
  • 2 tbsp sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Combine the flour, salt and oil.
  • Stir the sugar and yeast in the water, let stand for 5 minutes, then add to the flour mixture.
  • Knead the dough until it is soft and elastic. Let rest for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the challah, shape the dough into circles, set them in greased and floured baking pans and let them raise in a warm place for 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
  • Bake for 20 minutes or until golden.

Notes

It is a mitzvah (good deed) to dedicate a piece of the dough upon making challah. The golf-size portion is then burned in the bottom of the oven or on the stove top until blackened. The following blessing is recited:
Hebrew transliteration: Barukh Ata Hashem Elohenu Melekh ha’olam asher kideshanu bemitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hafrish hallah min a’isah.
Translation: Blessed are Thou Eternal our God, King of the universe, Who has hallowed us by Thy commandments and commanded us to separate the hallah from the dough
