It doesn’t get much more all-American than baseball, hot dogs and apple pie. Correction, make that a 5-star Apple Pie.
The iconic jingle was made famous in a 1974 commercial that went “Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet, they go together in the good ol' USA.”
History
I discovered that apple pies date back as far as the 1500s. Settlers from the Mayflower in the 1600s brought apple seeds to the colonies and began planting seeds and growing trees. And although it took another 200-plus years, the phrase “As American as apple pie” was in use by the 1860s, leading to pie’s place in history as an American favorite.
A Contest Winner
I found this recipe from Maggie Green as I was researching different recipes. It was a contest winner and had solid 5-star ratings. Of course, I had to try it. I liked it because it was fairly quick to prep and I was able to use premade frozen pie crusts rather than making them myself. In the end, I understood why it deserved the title of "Contest winner."
5-Star Apple Pie Recipe
The preparation time is about 20 minutes (most of it peeling apples). The cook time is 45 minutes. So, in a little over an hour, you can bake a pie that will have your guests asking for seconds.
If you prefer your apple pie a little more on the tart side, then use Granny Smith apples. I prefer it a little sweeter, so I use Red Delicious apples. It's a personal preference.
I use two frozen pie crusts. The first is for the pie. The second crust I use to cut into strips to create a lattice on top of the pie. (And, if I have any leftover dough, I'll add some decorative "hearts" to the crust for my wife.)
I hope you and your family will enjoy this 5-star Apple Pie Recipe. It's sweet. It's delicious. And it doesn't get much more American than this.
