Dalgona Whipped Coffee is the latest rage. Right?
Yeah, probably like most of you, I had never heard of it either. It wasn't until my teenage son asked me to make a cup for him the other day. He did his best to describe it. He was also quick to correct me when I suggested he may be asking about a cafe au lait. And it obviously wasn't a latte with frothy milk. He made is clear that it wasn't a Cafe Cubano either. It was Whipped Coffee!
He proceeded to pull out his phone, opened his TikTok app and showed me a short video of user @imhannahcho making one. She already had 10 million views of her dalgona whipped coffee video! In fact, it seems that users have popularized the whipped coffee trend on the app.
Making Dalgona Whipped Coffee
After a little bit of research, I found a number of recipes. The recipes were titled both as "Whipped Coffee" and "Beaten Coffee." Obviously named for the aggressive workout one gets while whipping the mixture into a thick golden, caramelized foam. Yes, it tastes as good as it sounds.
The ingredients consist of simple, everyday items. They include sugar, instant coffee, hot water, milk and ice. Two tablespoons each of hot water, sugar and instant coffee powder and a small mixing bowl begin the process.
I chose to hand whisk the ingredients for about 4-5 minutes solid. And while I got a good workout, it would have been made so much easier with a hand mixer. Surprisingly, I didn't think the mixture would ever "whip" up because it basically had the viscosity of water. It seemed like nothing was happening in the first 3 minutes.
Shortly after that is when the mixture really started to take shape. By the time I was done, it was thicker than any whipped cream I've whisked. In fact, it was so thick, that I had to vigorously use a rubber spatula to try to remove most of it from the mixing bowl.
Serving Dalgona Whipped Coffee
The next step was to get a glass mug, add ice and fill it with milk near to the top. The reason I suggest a glass mug, is because the whipped foam is so golden brown and thick, that you want to be able to "show it off."
Finally, scoop a dollop of the whipped mixture and float it on top of the milk. It's so sweet and thick that you will want to mix it into the milk.
I hope you will try the recipe and enjoy it as much as we did.
